A 300-acre preserve at the base of Shining Rock Wilderness is opening its trails to the public this summer, and you might spot a bald eagle while you are there. Lake Logan, the retreat and nature preserve in the Pigeon River valley in Haywood County, is offering guided nature tours led by its own environmental education coordinator.
The property sits near Canton and the Bethel community, up NC 215 off US 276, about a 45-minute drive from downtown Asheville and roughly 25 minutes from Waynesville. It is one of those places locals drive past for years without realizing what is back there.
