A 48-hour Jackson County road trip can cover the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee's Oconaluftee Visitor Center, barbecue in Dillsboro, dinner and drinks in downtown Sylva, and the short 0.2-mile Silver Run Falls trail near Cashiers. Jackson County sits about 2.5 hours from Atlanta, three hours from Charlotte and under two hours from Knoxville, according to Discover Jackson NC.

Jackson County can fill a weekend with a waterfall hike, a stop at one of the highest points on the Blue Ridge Parkway, barbecue from a Dillsboro spot ranked No. 11 on Yelp's Top 100 U.S. Restaurants of 2024, and an evening walk through downtown Sylva. Discover Jackson NC has laid out a 48-hour road trip itinerary that covers all of it.

It's also easy to reach. The county sits about 2.5 hours from Atlanta, three hours from Charlotte and under two hours from Knoxville, making it an easy option for a last-minute trip.

How should you spend the first morning?

Start on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Waterrock Knob, one of the highest points on the Parkway, for a short hike with panoramic views that's ideal for families with kids. The Parkway also offers easy access to high-elevation points like Richland Balsam, the highest point on the Parkway.

From there, the itinerary heads to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center in Cherokee, which Discover Jackson NC suggests for seeing elk and other wildlife like wild turkeys. The Oconaluftee River Trail is known for its scenery and for the Mountain Farm Museum, a 19th-century style interactive farm museum. The guide also suggests visiting the Museum of the Cherokee People while in the area, and in warmer months the Oconaluftee Indian Village offers living history demonstrations of traditional Cherokee crafts, dancing and daily life.

Where should you eat in Dillsboro and Sylva?

For lunch in Dillsboro, the itinerary suggests Haywood Smokehouse, which landed at No. 11 on Yelp's Top 100 U.S. Restaurants of 2024. Afterward, walk Front Street, peek into a few galleries and stop into Dogwood Crafters for a locally made souvenir.

Sylva is the evening stop. Park the car and take a walk downtown. Main Street is lined with bookstores, local shops, breweries and restaurants, anchored by the historic Jackson County Courthouse overlooking town. For something sweet, there's ice cream or chocolate from Baxley's Chocolates. For dinner, the guide points to Dalaya Thai Cuisine, Lulu's On Main or Meatballs Pizzaria for a quick option, followed by a local brew at Innovation Brewing, a glass of cabernet at Santé – The Wine Bar or inventive libations at The Cut Cocktail Lounge.

If you're road tripping with a pet, the guide suggests the newly renovated Hotel Sylva, right in the heart of downtown. If the family needs room to spread out, look at vacation rentals in the mountains.

Where can you hike on day two?

Grab coffee at City Lights Cafe or White Moon Cafe in downtown Sylva before driving into Cashiers. Silver Run Falls, just outside Cashiers, is a short 0.2-mile trail to a waterfall with a wide pool at its base.

For a bit more movement, Whiteside Mountain's moderate loop offers a ridgeline with several overlooks, views from Georgia to North Carolina's Appalachian Mountains, and sheer cliffs that stretch high above the valley floor. Discover Jackson NC calls it one of the oldest mountains in the country, and says peregrine falcons are often visible in photos taken from the summit.

How should you spend the second afternoon?

The Village Green is a 13-acre park with walking paths, art sculptures, a playground and a story walk that regularly changes out with new stories. In warmer months it's a spot for live music and outdoor events.

Slab Town Pizza is a family-owned spot for lunch, and Whiteside Brewing Co. is right across the street. Spend the afternoon in Cashiers' locally owned boutique shops, including the Cashiers Farmers Market, a family owned and operated specialty grocery and produce market, where you can say hello to their two golden retrievers.

The Orchard Restaurant serves seasonal Southern cuisine in a historic farmhouse setting with a garden. For the night, the guide recommends Hotel Cashiers or The Wells Hotel.

What is Jackson County like in the fall?

Discover Jackson NC says fall delivers one of the longest leaf seasons in the region. The roads connecting Sylva, Dillsboro and Cashiers wind through forested valleys and past rivers, and a Parkway drive offers sweeping mountain views and scenic pull-offs.
