North Carolina is shifting vehicle registration renewals to electronic delivery, meaning renewal notices arrive by email or text instead of a mailed card for drivers who have contact information on file with the NCDMV. Registration renewal still requires a current safety inspection and payment of county vehicle property tax through Tag & Tax Together. Western NC drivers should confirm their email, phone number and mailing address in their myNCDMV account.
If you have gotten used to that yellow renewal card showing up in the mailbox every year, plan on it disappearing. North Carolina is moving vehicle registration renewals to electronic delivery, and drivers across Buncombe County and the rest of Western NC will start getting notices by email or text instead of paper, according to reporting from the Asheville Citizen Times.
For anyone living along the I-26 corridor in Asheville or out past Sylva and Franklin on US-441, where a trip to a license plate agency can eat an hour each way, less paperwork is a fair trade. Franklin sits roughly 70 miles southwest of Asheville, about an hour and a half of driving, and Murphy is another hour past that. Fewer reasons to make that drive is not a bad thing.
