June Is Rhododendron Season in Mitchell County. Here's What You Need to Know.

By Jon Tharp, Broker  ·  May 26, 2026

At a Glance

The North Carolina Rhododendron Festival is held each June in Bakersville, Mitchell County, celebrating the peak bloom of Catawba rhododendrons on Roan Mountain Highlands. The festival features live music, artisan crafts, food vendors, and a traditional pageant. Bloom timing varies by weather and elevation. Early planning for lodging and timing a sunrise hike during peak color is strongly recommended.

The Catawba rhododendrons on Roan Mountain do not ease into bloom. When June arrives and conditions align, the ridgeline above Bakersville turns shades of pink and magenta that are hard to describe to someone who has never seen it. Rolling high-elevation meadows, cool mountain air, and thousands of acres of native rhododendron in full color. It is one of the most distinctive natural events in Western North Carolina, and it happens once a year.

The North Carolina Rhododendron Festival in Bakersville has been celebrating this annual display for decades. The festival runs over a weekend in June and is built around the town of Bakersville, the seat of Mitchell County, roughly 45 miles northeast of Asheville. It is the kind of event that blends the natural spectacle on the mountain with the character of a small Appalachian community.

Asheville's Citizen Vinyl Moves to Weaverville and Doubles Down on Vinyl Production

Asheville's Citizen Vinyl Moves to Weaverville and Doubles Down on Vinyl Production

Citizen Vinyl, NC's first vinyl record pressing plant, relocated from downtown Asheville to a larger facility at 179 Merrimon Ave in Weaverville. The move includes acquisition of two additional vinyl presses from Donaldson Record Pressing and five new executive hires. US vinyl sales hit $1 billion in 2025. Citizen Vinyl remains the world's exclusive manufacturer of NFC-embedded vinyl records via its proprietary vinylkey technology.

Citizen Vinyl has moved out of downtown Asheville, and the reason is simple: they needed more room to press more records.

The company, founded by Gar Ragland in 2020 as North Carolina's first vinyl pressing plant, relocated this spring to a new facility at 179 Merrimon Avenue in Weaverville. The move came with a significant upgrade in production capacity after Citizen Vinyl acquired the vinyl pressing equipment from Donaldson Record Pressing, which had been operating out of the same space. That acquisition added two presses to Citizen Vinyl's floor, cutting turnaround times and increasing the volume of records the plant can produce.

Blowing Rock Has Always Had Its Own Energy.

Blowing Rock Has Always Had Its Own Energy. Now WorldAtlas Made It Official.

WorldAtlas named Blowing Rock, NC the quirkiest town in North Carolina, pointing to its gravitational mystery attraction at Mystery Hill, Tweetsie Railroad theme park, a 15-stop downtown art and sculpture trail, and a packed annual event calendar. Despite a year-round population of fewer than 1,400 people, Blowing Rock consistently punches above its weight, drawing visitors and potential residents from across the country to the Blue Ridge.

Blowing Rock has fewer than 1,400 year-round residents. WorldAtlas just declared it the quirkiest town in North Carolina, and anyone who has spent a few hours there already knows they are not wrong.

The designation came from a WorldAtlas feature that looked at what makes the town so distinct: a gravity-defying mystery attraction, a working steam-powered theme park, a 15-stop public art trail through downtown, and an event calendar that would be ambitious for a city ten times the size. The article's point was that the town does far more than its population would suggest.

Life at Jarrett Hills: Mountain Privacy Minutes from Historic Dillsboro

There's a particular kind of life available in the mountains of Western North Carolina that doesn't get talked about enough. It's not just the views or the air or the sound of a river running near a ridgeline. It's the combination of those things with a front door that opens onto a real community, a walkable downtown full of history, and enough land around you that none of it feels crowded.

North Carolina vs. Tennessee Taxes for Retirees and Veterans: The Full Picture for 2026

By Jon Tharp, Broker  ·  May 24, 2026

Tennessee has no state income tax, and that headline advantage is real. But the full comparison is closer than it appears. Tennessee carries the highest combined sales tax rate in the United States at an average of 9.55%, taxing groceries, clothing, and daily spending at rates North Carolina does not. North Carolina's flat income tax rate is declining toward 2.99% by 2028, both states fully exempt Social Security and military retirement pay with no cap, and WNC's property tax rates are often lower than Tennessee's mountain county averages. For veterans, retirees on Social Security, and buyers focused on quality of land and mountain lifestyle over raw income tax rate, the math is closer than Tennessee's zero-income-tax reputation suggests.

North Carolina vs. Georgia Taxes for Retirees and Veterans: A Real Comparison for 2026

North Carolina vs. Georgia Taxes for Retirees and Veterans: A Real Comparison for 2026

North Carolina and Georgia are both tax-friendly for retirees and veterans, but the details differ significantly. North Carolina fully exempts military retirement pay with no cap or age requirement, exempts all Social Security income, and has a flat income tax rate dropping toward 2.99% by 2028. Georgia offers a more generous retirement income exclusion for non-military retirees 65 and older ($65,000 per person), a higher disabled veteran property tax exemption, and a state sales tax rate that starts lower. The right state depends on the type of income you're living on.

Western North Carolina is home to one of the most extraordinary natural light shows on the planet. Great Smoky Mountains National Park alone hosts 19 species of fireflies, including the synchronous firefly (Photinus carolinus) — an insect so unusual that scientists once believed it could only exist in Southeast Asia. Three major managed firefly events run in WNC and the surrounding mountains each summer, all with limited capacity and lottery or advance ticket systems: the GSMNP Elkmont synchronous firefly event, the Grandfather Mountain "Grandfather Glows" event, and the Cradle of Forestry Blue Ghost Firefly Tours near Brevard. If you are planning a trip to WNC in late May or June, understanding which event to pursue — and how to get in — is the starting point.

Lakefront home prices range from roughly $1.2 million to $2.5 million. Dockable waterfront lots run $460,000 to $650,000. And the north shore view is permanently protected — it is national park land and always will be.
