220 Ridge Top Drive in Bryson City is the second kind of home.

Set on approximately 8.72 deeded acres in Swain County, the residence brings together timber-frame and cabin character, natural materials, wide mountain views, river frontage, and a substantial collection of original Western North Carolina art. The home's visual center is its stone fireplace. In February 2021, the previous fireplace, firebox, and flue were removed and replaced. Uniform ledge stone was installed across the fireplace and adjoining walls, creating a broad architectural feature rather than a single isolated hearth.

Major Improvements Behind the Character

The atmosphere of a mountain home gets attention first, but its systems determine how comfortably it lives. The owners completed a series of significant improvements beginning in 2021.

The heating and air conditioning system was replaced, and a third zone was added for the loft. The conventional water heater was replaced with two on-demand propane units. The internal water system received a DAB pump and two 250-gallon storage tanks. French drains were installed around the foundation to manage exterior water.

Electrical improvements included replacement Leviton outlets and switches, a whole-home surge suppressor, separate greenhouse power, and electrical service along the driveway for the entrance light and well-head heater. A whole-home Generac generator provides another layer of resilience.

The property also has remote propane tank monitoring, a five-camera Blink system that conveys, and six motion-sensing security lights that convey.

These upgrades do not change the home's visual story. They support it, making the timber, stone, views, gathering spaces, and quieter corners easier to enjoy.

Bryson City and the Country Around It

Bryson City is the seat of Swain County and one of the true gateway towns to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It has stayed small. The downtown is walkable in about fifteen minutes, and the Tuckasegee River runs straight through the middle of it.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is headquartered downtown, and its excursion trains are the reason a lot of visitors first come here. Deep Creek sits just north of town, inside the park boundary, with three waterfalls along an easy loop and a tubing tradition that goes back generations. West of town, the Nantahala Gorge draws paddlers from all over the country, and the outfitters along the river run trips from spring through fall.

The fishing is a category of its own. Between the Tuckasegee, the Nantahala, the park's backcountry streams, and Fontana Lake itself, a person could fish a different piece of water every weekend for a season. Swain County sits inside the region's fly fishing corridor, and the water here is a large part of why people move to this county rather than a busier one.

For riders, the Tsali Recreation Area on the Fontana peninsula is among the best known mountain biking trail systems in the Southeast. For hikers, the national park needs no introduction, and the Appalachian Trail crosses Fontana Dam on its way north.

What ties it together is how little of Swain County can ever be built. The national park and the Nantahala National Forest hold the great majority of the land here. That is the quiet advantage of buying in this county. The view you purchase is not dependent on what a neighbor decides to do with the parcel next door.
