Mitchell County has three gem-mining destinations near the Blue Ridge Parkway: Rio Doce Gem Mine in Spruce Pine and Gem Mountain, both under five minutes from the Parkway entrance, and Emerald Village near Little Switzerland. Visitors pick buckets of ore, and each stop offers a way to turn finds into jewelry. Emerald Village adds a mining museum, an underground Bon Ami Mine tour, gold panning and digging at the Crabtree Emerald Mine.
Less than five minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance, you can sit down at a flume, wash the dirt out of a bucket of mining ore and see what turns up, whether quartz, garnet, aquamarine or something else. That is a fall day in Mitchell County.
Mitchell County is home to three gem-mining destinations: Rio Doce Gem Mine, Gem Mountain and Emerald Village. Together they make a fall itinerary, with the Blue Ridge Parkway and the fall color of the Blue Ridge Mountains close at hand.
Why Mitchell County for Gem Mining
Rio Doce in Spruce Pine has connections to the famous Spruce Pine Mining District of North Carolina. Emerald Village alone is home to 12 historic real mines and has been featured on National Geographic TV and the Travel Channel.
At Rio Doce and Gem Mountain the setup is the same. You pick a bucket, settle in at the flume and wash the ore until the stones separate from the dirt. Emerald Village's Gemstone Mine also offers a variety of gem buckets. What changes from mine to mine is what surrounds the bucket, and that is where planning the fall trip gets fun. Rio Doce Gem Mine: Just Minutes from the Parkway
Rio Doce sits just off the Parkway in Spruce Pine, less than five minutes from the Parkway entrance. Veterans own and operate the mine, and veterans get 10 percent off buckets. Admission and parking are free.
The mine has connections to the gem mines of Rio Doce, or Sweet River, in Brazil, and it still gets many of its gems directly from the mine there, along with material from North Carolina. Rio Doce guarantees gemstones in every bucket, and the finds can include quartz, garnet, aquamarine and more.
The bucket becomes a keepsake after the flume. Rio Doce cuts stones on site and offers jewelry and lapidary services. If you have a faceting question, the mine tells visitors to come in and ask Oomba. (Sources: riodoce.com, discovermitchellnc.com)
Gem Mountain: For People Who Want to Dig at a Real Mine
Gem Mountain Gemstone Mine is also less than five minutes from the Parkway entrance, so it pairs easily with a day of fall sightseeing. The flume experience is similar. Pick a bucket, settle in and see what turns up.
Gem Mountain also offers guided mine trips. Instead of only washing ore at the flume, visitors can dig directly at a working mine.
Once you have your stones, you can have them identified, and you can turn a special discovery into jewelry. (Source: discovermitchellnc.com)

Emerald Village: Where the Mining History Lives
Emerald Village, just off Little Switzerland, has a lot to see and do. It is a group of gem, mining and historical attractions just off the Parkway, within an hour's drive of Asheville, Boone and Blowing Rock, and it is home to 12 historic real mines.
Start with the North Carolina Mining Museum and the underground tour of the historic Bon Ami Mine. The Bon Ami Waterfall splashes nearby, and the grounds hold impressive collections of old mining and historical equipment. The Discovery Mill building runs 12 levels of exhibits, including a model railroad, native wildlife, black-light minerals, an antique tool collection and an Antique Music Museum.
The Gemstone Mine at Emerald Village offers a choice of buckets, and you keep everything you find, with jewelry-making for special finds. You can pan for gold too. For the rugged option, you can dig for emeralds in the dumps of the Crabtree Emerald Mine or search the historic McKinney Mine dumps, where more than 100 different rocks, minerals and gems have been found.
On select special nights, the Black Light Mine Tour takes visitors underground with ultraviolet lamps that light up the mine. Emerald Village is pet friendly, takes all major credit and debit cards, has two gift shops, a quick-snack option and indoor and outdoor picnic areas if you bring lunch. Building the Fall Day Around It
One route is to chase color along the Parkway in the morning, then stop at Rio Doce or Gem Mountain, since both are less than five minutes from the entrance. Save Emerald Village for a day when you want the museum, the mine tour and a picnic on top of the bucket time.
Between stops, Spruce Pine and Little Switzerland both have shops and galleries to explore, and a stop for local flavor fits naturally along the way. Whether you uncover a sparkling crystal, a colorful gemstone or simply a great memory, the point is the same. You spent a fall day in the mountains with your hands in the dirt.
