Burnsville doesn't need a big festival to fill a weekend. The town sits at the center of one of the most artistically rich communities in the country, and in March 2026, Yancey County has a calendar packed enough to justify more than one trip north on 19E.

Whether you're driving up for the day or staying over, here's what's on the schedule.

RuthFest: March 14 on the Town Square

If you only make it to one event this month, make it RuthFest. The annual celebration at Burnsville Town Center starts at 3 PM with a chili and cornbread cookoff, with community teams competing for first, second, and third place. Red Clay Revival takes the stage at 6 PM.

The event honors Ruth Banks, remembered as someone "whose table always had room for one more." Proceeds go to Mountain Strong and Southern Waters, two organizations doing recovery and resilience work across Western North Carolina. A week earlier, on Saturday, March 7, the Burnsville Spring Fest Show takes over Town Center from 9 AM to 3 PM. Local crafters bring paintings, quilts, candles, and handmade goods that you won't find on any shelf at any chain store.

Yancey County has more working artists per capita than anywhere in the United States, anchored in part by the nationally recognized Penland School of Crafts just over the county line in Mitchell County. Pink Floyd at Mayland Earth to Sky Park

On Sunday, March 8, Mayland Earth to Sky Park hosts a Pink Floyd Visualization Show from 2 to 3 PM. The park's 360-degree digital planetarium theater wraps the band's music in full-dome visuals. It sounds like a novelty, and then it turns out to be one of those things people talk about on the drive home. If you haven't been to Earth to Sky Park before, this is a good excuse to go.

What the Rest of March Looks Like

March 14 also includes a Spring Workday at Parkway Playhouse from noon to 4 PM, where volunteers help prepare the theater for its summer season. The Parkway Playhouse holds the title of oldest continually operating summer theater in North Carolina, and a few hours there behind the scenes is a different way to see what makes Burnsville worth coming back to.

Shamrock & Roll Skate Night at Heritage Roller Rink runs the same evening, from 6 to 9 PM, for anyone with kids in tow or anyone who just wants a St. Patrick's Day-themed excuse to lace up.

On March 18, Homeplace Beer Company hosts a Paint & Sip at 6 PM. The subject is landscape painting, tickets are $38, and you leave with something you made. Homeplace has been running these events regularly and they tend to fill up, so if this is your kind of evening, don't wait on it.

The Burnsville Rummage Sale runs March 20 and 21 with clothing, antiques, toys, and home goods. These are the events where people who know the area tend to show up early and stay late.

The month closes with the Annual Burnsville Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 28, at 1 PM on The Square. There's a separate section for the youngest kids, and it's the kind of community event that feels increasingly rare in a lot of places.
