The trail takes anglers through a wide variety of fly fishing experiences, from wade fishing to float fishing, from small streams to big water. Along the way, you'll find 15 prime fishing stops, more than 4,600 miles of streams, and 1,100 miles of hatchery-supported waters. Hundreds of trout-packed streams wind through the thick canopy of the Nantahala National Forest and the rugged hills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Anglers come here to catch rainbow, brook, brown, and even golden and Donaldson trout. These waters range from small mountain streams with wild rainbows, browns, and brook trout to bigger Western-style streams like the Tuckasegee River. Some areas are heavily stocked. Most have a healthy population of wild stream-born trout. If you only have time for one stop on the trail, make it the Tuckasegee. Known locally as "the Tuck," the Delayed Harvest section runs between the towns of Sylva and Webster, just a short three-mile drive from the fly shop in downtown Sylva. The delayed harvest designation means fishing is strictly catch-and-release from October through the first Saturday in June, which allows trout populations to build to impressive numbers before harvest season opens. During peak months, the Tuck runs thick with trout and with anglers who know a good thing when they see it. For those looking to go off the beaten path, smaller, lesser-known spots like Panthertown Creek are worth the extra effort. Three miles of stream surrounded by distinct craggy rock formations make it one of the most photogenic stretches of water on the trail. Jackson County's reputation isn't marketing fluff. The county was officially proclaimed the North Carolina Trout Capital in 2016, and it's annually stocked with more fish than any other county in the state. Whether you're a beginner who just tied your first fly or a seasoned angler who's fished rivers on multiple continents, you'll find water and fish that match your skill level here. For first-timers especially, a guided trip is worth every penny. Guides can have rods, reels, and flies ready, and with some advance planning, even waders. North Carolina residents can purchase a fishing license for $7. Non-residents pay $18. If you'll be fishing in Sylva, Dillsboro, or Webster, a Mountain Heritage Trout Waters license is available for $5 and is good for three days. Trail maps are free and available at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce or the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce, or you can download one at FlyFishingTrail.com. The map includes GPS coordinates, access points, waterway designations, regulations, and species information for all 15 stops. Pay close attention to posted regulations at each spot. Rules around harvest, delayed harvest, and catch-and-release can vary significantly from one stretch of water to the next. When in doubt, practice catch-and-release.
